Maintenance Worker I - To perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor and general maintenance, repair, and construction work functions in the upkeep and care of City infrastructure and facilities; and to operate and/or learn to operate and maintain common and specialized vehicles, equipment, and tools used in completion of work assignments. Positions in this classification may be assigned to work in street, park, or building maintenance and may perform work independently or as part of a work crew with other maintenance staff or staff outside the maintenance division. Positions in this classification may also be required to work in departments other than their primary assigned department, based on the needs of the City as required by the Department Head. Employees in this position generally provide front line work and are responsible for maintenance of City infrastructure and facilities, including participating in standby duty and call back programs for after-hours and weekend response and emergencies upon demonstrated ability. This position functions at an entry level for this classification. Works under direct supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures.
Maintenance Worker II - To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled labor and general maintenance, repair, and construction work functions in the upkeep and care of City infrastructure and facilities; and to operate and maintain common and specialized vehicles, equipment, and tools used in completion of work assignments. Positions in this classification are assigned to primarily work in street, park, or building maintenance and may perform work independently or as part of a work crew with other maintenance staff or staff outside the maintenance division. Positions in this classification may also be required to work in departments other than their primary assigned department, based on the needs of the City as required by the Department Head. Depending on assignment, positions in this classification may have primary responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of designated parks, streets, buildings, or other City facilities; or may be assigned to operate specialized equipment or perform a specialized function as part of a work crew or for work projects. Employees is this position generally provide front line work and response for maintenance of City infrastructure and facilities, including participating in standby duty and call back programs for after-hours and weekend response and emergencies. This position functions at a journey level for this classification series and requires the application of specialized knowledge and skill to successfully perform the essential duties and responsibilities. Works under general supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures. Positions in this classification may work independently on established tasks or at an assigned site. May direct and monitor the work of temporary or non-City employees as assigned in a lead capacity. May direct and monitor the work of temporary or non-City employees in a lead capacity.

Maintenance Worker I - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs a variety of parks and grounds maintenance tasks, including include mowing, watering, raking, pruning, athletic field preparation, and other turf maintenance duties.
Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of City sidewalks, streets, curbs, gutters, storm drains, and traffic signs.
Maintains assigned areas, facilities, and equipment in clean and orderly condition. Cleans restrooms, picks up trash, clears walkways.
Operates and may make minor repairs to small-to-medium sized automotive or specialized equipment.
Assists in a variety of general maintenance and repair work including carpentry, painting, welding, and plumbing.
Assists in the more complex and specialized maintenance and construction tasks as appropriate to assignment. Learns the operation of large and specialized equipment as assigned.
Performs electrical and plumbing repairs as needed.
Provides scheduled maintenance and repair of assigned equipment including removal, repair, and replacement of various parts and components, tune-ups, oil changes, blade sharpening, etc.
Paints interior and exterior surfaces and completes other building related repairs as required.
Inspects assigned areas for vandalism and hazardous conditions; makes necessary repairs.
Operates and maintains a pick-up truck with lift-gate.
Hauls loads to landfill as assigned.
Delineates traffic at work areas following established guidelines.
Performs a variety of heavy construction, maintenance and repair work in support of special parks and public works projects as assigned.
Assists in maintaining records related to duties performed and equipment used.
Maintains job request/work order records. Create and monitor project lists.
Performs general cleaning and janitorial functions in the upkeep of assigned areas in City buildings including, but not limited to: meeting room preparation; floor maintenance; wall, furniture, woodwork, counter and office equipment; restroom disinfecting, replenishing supplies; metal work, windows and glass doors; waste disposal; light fixtures.
Performs minor building maintenance and repair work such as replacing faucet washers, replacing lamps, fixtures, bulbs and tubes, changing air filters, installing shelves, and unclogging toilets and drains; assists with major maintenance work as assigned.
May purchase janitorial supplies, light bulbs and other supplies; maintains supplies in a safe manner.
Assists with and participates in the City’s special events, including installing traffic control and other preparatory and clean-up activities.
Performs related duties similar to the above in scope and function, as required.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Moves, rearranges and sets up chairs, tables, desks and other furniture and equipment for meetings, classes and other events.
Locks and unlocks doors and gates as and when needed to ensure security of buildings and related areas; raises and lowers flags.
Participates in the Public Works Department’s “Standby Duty” and “Call Back” programs for after-hours and weekend maintenance, repairs, and emergencies upon demonstrated ability.
Keeps maintenance facility and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
Attends and participates in internal and external safety and certification training.
Maintenance Worker II - ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs a variety of general maintenance and repair work including carpentry, painting, welding, and plumbing.
Provides scheduled maintenance and repair of assigned equipment including removal, repair, and replacement of various parts and components, tune-ups, oil changes, blade sharpening, etc.
Maintains assigned areas in safe, clean, and orderly condition; cleans restrooms, picks up litter, empty trash containers, clears walkways, and stock supplies.
Inspects assigned areas for vandalism and hazardous conditions; makes necessary repairs.
Operates and maintains a variety of automotive and specialized equipment such as loader, mower, backhoe, patch truck, dump truck, lift truck and sweeper.
Hauls loads to landfill as assigned.
Delineates traffic at work areas following established guidelines.
Performs a variety of heavy construction, maintenance and repair work in support of special parks and public works projects as assigned.
Maintains records related to duties performed and equipment used.
Troubleshoot, correct, and repair facilities, equipment, and tools to ensure proper function and long-lasting performance in a cost-effective manner.
Participates in City special events including preparatory work, executing road closures and parking restrictions, cleanup, and other public works related support activities.
Participates in the Public Works Department’s “Standby Duty” and “Call Back” programs for after-hours and weekend maintenance, repairs, and emergencies.
When assigned to Street Maintenance:
Participates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of sidewalks and streets.
Maintains and clears storm drains, catch basins, and storm drain pipes.
Installs, repairs, and maintains traffic regulation signs.
Maintain and inspect right-of-way and boulevard vegetation and trim or remove trees, bushes and other obstacles to provide safe lateral clear zones and intersection site lines.
When assigned to Park Maintenance:
Performs turf maintenance including mowing and edging lawns and athletic fields.
Plants, cultivates, trims, waters, and sprays ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, and flowers; prepares and treats soil for planting.
Prepares and applies pesticides and herbicides to landscape areas (if certified/licensed).
Maintains playing fields; drags and lines field following established guidelines.
Maintains and repairs sprinkler/irrigation systems; installs and repairs sprinkler heads, lines, valves, and controllers; sets controllers to regulate watering.
When assigned to Building Maintenance:
Performs all aspects of carpentry, including rough and finish work.
Operates all levels of hand and power machinery and tools, including but not limited to tables saws, circular saws, routers, drills, nail guns, etc.
Performs electrical and plumbing repairs as needed.
Maintains and repairs a variety of HVAC units.
Paints interior and exterior surfaces and completes other building related repairs as required.
Performs routine janitorial tasks and meeting room preparation.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
Attends and participates in internal and external safety and certification training.
Assists with responding to citizen requests and complaints, including investigating various matters.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as apparent or assigned, including assisting and participating in essential duties of other maintenance areas.
Typical Qualifications
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Maintenance Worker I -
Education and Experience:
Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent, and
Any combination of experience, training and/or education to demonstrate abilities essential to the performance of the position.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
Ability to read, write, and maintain routine records at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties.
Ability to safely and effectively operate and/or learn to operate automotive and/or specialized equipment as assigned; learn basic plumbing, electrical and carpentry maintenance techniques; ability to learn turf mowing; practices, procedures, and techniques pertaining to assigned area.
Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Maintenance Worker II -
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; and
Two years experience in skilled, semi-skilled, and general labor performing maintenance, repair, construction, or other similar job-related tasks, with preference to such experience being related to public infrastructure and facilities.

Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the satisfactory performance of the job requirements.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the methods, tools, equipment, and procedures used in public works maintenance and construction work with special emphasis on streets and drainage systems, parks and recreational facilities, and/or building component systems.
Working knowledge of safety procedures used in public works construction and maintenance projects.
If assigned, certification and licensing in the safe and proper use and application of herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides.
Ability to safely and effectively perform semi-skilled and skilled labor and general maintenance, repair, and construction work for assigned facilities; safely and effectively operate automotive and specialized equipment utilized in assigned maintenance area and general construction work.
When assigned to parks maintenance: thorough knowledge of turf and grounds maintenance, gardening, landscaping, athletic and recreation facilities maintenance, operating and repairing irrigation systems, playground safety, and building janitorial and grounds keeping.
When assigned to streets maintenance: thorough knowledge of work zone traffic control and safety, repairing asphalt pavements and concrete, traffic signs and pavement markings, drainage principles, and general trench safety.
When assigned to building maintenance: thorough knowledge of building construction, heating/ventilation/air conditioning, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, lighting, painting, hardware and locks, building janitorial, and grounds keeping.
Ability to learn and effectively apply procedures and methods used in the repair and maintenance of assigned specialized equipment; learn and apply the rules and regulations associated with the proper maintenance of playing fields and park grounds as related to assignment.
Skill in the operation of the equipment related to and/or necessary to the performance of the job.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; maintain routine records; understand and follow oral and written instructions; meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
Supplemental Information
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of valid Class C California Driver License and a satisfactory driving record.
Possession of valid Commercial Class A or B California Driver License and a satisfactory driving record for personnel assigned to streets maintenance (or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire).
Possession of a valid Qualified Applicator Certificate or License (QAC/QAL), Category B, issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation for personnel assigned to parks maintenance (or the ability to obtain within six months of hire).
Pursuant to California Labor Code Section 3211.9, service is essential in times of extreme emergency or disaster. For this reason, State law designates public employees as “Disaster Service Workers”. Even when off-duty, this position may be required to return to duty in case of emergency or disaster.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
A variety of automotive and specialized equipment including truck, tractor, hydraulic boom truck, and mowers, turf tractor, riding mower, ditch witch, and dump truck, power and hand tools such as blowers, mowers, edgers, sod cutters, aerators, and chain saw, blower, jackhammer, concrete finishing tools, concrete saw, chainsaws, sandblasters, and paving tools, motorized vehicles, mobile radio, phone and computer.
