CITY AND JOB OVERVIEW:
Under general supervision, as a major assignment, operates heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance projects and performs incidental construction and manual labor as necessary.
We currently have one full-time opening in the Street Maintenance Division. We anticipate creating an eligibility list from this recruitment that may be used to fill current and future vacancies for this classification.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Operates heavy equipment such as graders, large pavers, large front end loaders, motor graders, backhoes, skid steers with attachments and comparable equipment;
Operates light equipment such as skiploaders, rollers, pavement breakers and other equipment as required;
Performs routine servicing of equipment, makes adjustments and does routine repair work;
Grades, shapes, backfills and contours surfaces to engineering specifications via light and heavy machinery;
Performs skilled and unskilled manual and construction work when not actually engaged in equipment operation;
Reports needs for mechanical adjustment and repair;
Operates major earth-moving equipment to perform critical grading or excavating projects according to engineering specifications;
Directs work of subordinate employees;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
EXPERIENCE Two years of experience in the operation of construction equipment, including at least one year of increasingly skilled operation of heavy power-driven equipment. For appointment to the Wastewater Division: Candidates appointed to the position must currently possess a Grade II Collection System Maintenance Certificate. EDUCATION Graduation from an accredited High School or successful completion of the G.E.D. (General Educational Development) exam. KNOWLEDGE OF Operation, care and adjustment of heavy, power-driven construction and street repair equipment; operation of other types of motorized construction equipment; methods, practices and materials used in public works construction and maintenance; safety rules and precautions in operation of equipment, including local, state, federal and OSHA ordinances and regulations regarding the activities of assigned section; and effective customer service techniques and principles. ABILITY TO Operate equipment efficiently following safe working practices and appropriate procedures to maintain safe working conditions; detect needed mechanical work and make minor repairs; work without immediate supervision; follow verbal and written instructions; work cooperatively and communicate effectively with co-workers, the public, contractors, equipment manufacturers and utilities representatives in a courteous, effective, and professional manner; perform heavy manual labor as needed; read maps, blueprints and GIS information; commit to providing quality customer service. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Wear protective equipment, including boots, gloves, eye & hearing protection and back brace. Must possess a Class "A" California driver's license and an acceptable driving record in order to operate a City vehicle. An acceptable driving record is one that has three (3) or fewer DMV points issued within the past five (5) years, and no more than one (1) DUI within the past ten (10) years. Subject to DOT-mandated random drug testing. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Incumbents in this classification sit for extended periods of time, lift and carry over 25 lbs., push and pull objects, climb stairs, simultaneously use arms and legs, stoop, bend, lean, turn, twist, crouch, kneel, squat, reach above and below shoulder level, use fingers, hands and legs repetitively, perform rapid mental/muscular coordination, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, distinguish shades and colors, see long distances, see small details, drive vehicles and operate motorized equipment. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment described here is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Incumbents in this classification have direct contact with the public, experience vibrations and constant movement while working outside in varying temperatures and dry, dusty atmospheric conditions, around electrical hazards, dangerous machinery, moving vehicles and machinery with moving parts, loud engine noises, exhaust fumes, chemicals and other explosive substances, including diesel, gasoline, propane, cleaners and asphalt. Protective equipment for eyes, ears, head, back, hands and feet is required.
